Any printers on here?
No, not the Bleeding Claret kind, press operators or machine minders / managers whatever they call them now?

I'd like to know how the industry is going, last I heard it was fucking grim

Left school got my City & Guilds in printing. Worked in the trade for a few years. Absolutely hated it. Most people had their heads in the sand, regarding where the industry was going. (This was the early 90’s BTW) Surprised it’s managed to limp on until now. Haven’t touched a press in 25 years. Certainly don’t miss it. Best of luck to the people who are now being shown the door.

Its grim right across the board from magazines down to stationary print which has been shrinking year on year, my last redundancy was a couple of years ago but I managed to stay in the industry and got a job in a foil blocking company.
But even in the couple of years I've been there it work has been coming in on a less regular basis maybe its me and I'm just a bloody jonah!

It's all automated from Germany. No real skils needed

Absolute bollocks, while there is a lot of automation now, the skill comes in when things go wrong as they inevitably will

Percy, sheet fed printer here, last press I ran was a 6 colour 40 inch Heidelberg.

Those Lithoman web presses sure push out some speed don't they?

Re: Any printers on here?
It's certainly grim I worked for one of the biggest magazine printers in the east of England over 500 titles and seven presses including two 64 page Lithomans.
Once the digital age became big when you can view most titles online that was the beginning of the end.
Our company closed down in 2015 with 300 redundancies.
Most of the machine minders are now doing alternative work.

The amount of shit coming through my letterbox has gone down massively since the Rona hit so you might have heard right.
